A project to experiment with, document and learn from practices of sensing at different scales, to explore the relationship between safety, insecurity and artificial light at night in the public realm.

Published for the first phase of the project, the website tracks these processes and research, commissioned for (In)security, part of the ‘UrbTerr’ research programme led by Dr Katharina Karcher at the University of Birmingham and Eastside Projects.

Exhibited as part of ‘it might be nothing, but it could be something’ at Eastside Projects, Birmingham, the website exists as a location and environment-responsive work-in-progress during C-19, with new content including audio tours, visual essays and publications added over the course of the exhibition.

What kind of knowledge does the experience of night in urban spaces produce? How has the past year and ongoing uncertainty influenced this experience?
